What is this mystery nut? I have found several in the
small forest where I walk the dog. The forest, however, is
predominately western hemlock, douglas fir and red cedar
with the accompanying undergrowth of salal, ferns,
salmonberry etc. So what could it be? I have also found
this shell on the sidewalks near my place, and one actually
in my garden. As the closest thing nearby is a lone holly
bush, I can only assume that birds are dropping the shells
or squirrels are moving them about.
After a long overseas phone call with my mum, we determined
it might be a walnut of some kind, possibly a Heartnut
Walnut.
